My apologies for the delay in posting. Alas, furnace problems have bedeviled me. If the karma folks cut me a break, I plan to see Paranormal Activity and/or Where the Wild Things Are today.
In the meantime, I have sort of a placeholder question.
I read the other day that Saw VII and Saw VIII are on the way, and my placeholder question is ...
WHY????!?!!?!?!??
OK, OK, I know one answer to that, which is "Because they make money."
But again, WHY????!?!!?!?!??
Seriously, I'd be curious to know the mindset of the moviegoer here. My understanding is that the first Saw was actualy pretty decent, and the rest of them have been progressively less interesting. So if the films are getting worse, why are people still going? Is my overall dislike of the creatively bankrupt horror genre clouding my vision here?
Tell me.

I think the answer to your question is risk.
The studios will keep making Saw movies because they very low risk.
They can make them for $10 million or less, spend a fraction on advertising because it's now a known franchise, and not sweat over the films ability to gross around $20 million to break even.
They do more than make money. They make profits. And they can do it once a year.
With the economy the way it is, no one is taking any risks on any kind of films that might under perform. It can sink a studio. Ask MGM.
So before there are more films like Juno and Little Miss Sunshine, there will three more Saw movies, another Harry Potter, another Transformers and they will somehow figure out how to do Where The Wild Things Are 2.
The studios are owned by megacorporations and run by lawyers and accountants.
They are not in the business of creating cultural discourse the way they used to be.
They want a widget they can sell to make a profit.
And since the consumer, hungry for date and weekend entertainment, is forced to eat from the increasingly boring and tasteless buffet provided by these corporations, they will take another helping of Saw - if you please.
